Em Shemot (Êxodo) 12:2, D-us ordena a Moshê (Moisés): "Este mês é para vocês o princípio dos meses, que ele seja o primeiro dos meses do ano." E assim, por ordem divina, inicia-se o calendário bíblico.

A palavra hebraica chôdesh (חֹדֶשׁ - mês) possui o mesmo radical da palavra chadash (חָדָשׁ - novo). Na Bíblia, a palavra "chôdesh" também é usada para indicar a Lua Nova, aparecendo 284 vezes!

Os meses judaicos se iniciam com a Lua Nova, em um ciclo que se renova sempre: chidush (חִדּוּשׁ - renovação) também possui o mesmo radical.

Entender o ciclo do ano judaico nos ajuda a entender as festividades bíblicas e também as festas judaicas comemoradas atualmente. 

A história narrada no livro de Rute se passa na época da colheita, e não é a toa que a Bíblia menciona este fato. A "Festa das Cabanas" (Sucót ou Tabernáculos) sempre ocorre no outono, quando começam as chuvas em Israel. Justamente na época que precisamos de proteção contra as intempéries, somos ordenados a sair de casa e viver em cabanas por uma semana.

In Shemot (Exodus) 12:2, Gd commands Moses (Moses): "This month is to you the beginning of months, it is the first month of the year." And so, by divine command, begins the Biblical calendar. 

The Hebrew word chodesh (חֹדֶשׁ - month) has the same root as the word chadash (חָדָשׁ - new). In the Bible, the word "chodesh" is also used to indicate the New Moon, appearing 284 times! 

Jewish months begin with the new moon, in a cycle that always renews: chidush (חִדּוּשׁ - renewal) also from the same root. 

Understanding the cycle of the Jewish year helps us understand the biblical festivals and also the Jewish feasts celebrated today. 

The story told in the book of Ruth is happening at harvest time, and it is no wonder that the Bible mentions this fact. The "Feast of Booths" (or Tabernacles Sukkot) always occurs in the fall when the rains begin in Israel. Just at the time that we need protection from the weather, we are commanded to leave home and live in huts for a week.
